The VII Asian Winter Games were opened with the Ski Orienteering Sprint events at the Sodatskoye Uschcelje Ski Stadium in Almaty, Kazakhstan. The conditions were perfect: sunshine, few degrees minus, white snow, and the impressing Talgar mountains with 4000 meters high peaks in the background.
The number of athletes that each nation can enter in the World Cup events in 2011 is based on the World Ranking List Federation League table (World Cup 11 Quotas) as at 1 January 2011.
The ski orienteering events in the Asian Winter Games in Astana and Almaty, Kazakhstan, begin on Monday with sprint. This is the first time that ski orienteering is present at these multi sport games, which are held every four years for members of the Olympic Council of Asia.
Relay World Champion Staffan Tunis, Finland, joined the Athletes' Commission for Ski Orienteering just before the European Championships kick off in Norway next week. Tunis replaces Hannele Tonna who has ended her international ski orienteering career.
